Chris Matlock, selected in the 21st round of the MLB draft by the Texas Rangers, is pitching for the Spokane Indians, the short-season Class A minor league affiliate.

Matlock, who was named the "Pitcher of the Year" in Division II Baseball by the ABCA, becomes the 48th Mule to sign with a Major League organization, and is the 17th since 2002. Central Missouri has now had a player sign with a MLB affiliated club the last eight consecutive years.

Matlock, who is the MIAA single-season (14) and career (25) saves record holder, also owns the MIAA record for consecutive scoreless innings at 40.2. He was also a selection to the first-team Daktronics and ABCA All-America squads at relief pitcher. Only one reliever is selected to the first-team. Matlock also was the MIAA and South Central Region Pitcher of the Year, and earned first-team honors in the league and region. He had the nation’s best strikeout-to-walk ratio of 79-to-4 (one of which was an intentional walk), and ranked third in the nation with 14 saves.
He ended the year with a 6-2 record and a 1.19 ERA in 53 innings, and helped the Mules to a #10 national ranking in the final D-II poll with a 44-15 overall record.The All-American recognition by ABCA continues a string of post-season honors for Matlock and Tuttle, both named to the Daktronics D-II "All-American Team". Matclock, who was also named the 2009 ABCA / Rawlings All-South Central Region "Pitcher of the Year", is joined by outfielder Chance Tuttle, named to the third-team.

Mules miscues are costly in regional title game
The Mules saw their season end Monday with a 15-6 loss to Emporia State in the championship game of the NCAA-II South Central Regional at Crane Stadium-Tompkins Field. Five errors by the Mules led to nine unearned runs, including seven in the third inning, as the Hornets built a 14-0 lead before the Mules scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Bret Schwartz had three hits to lead the Mules, who finish the season with a 44-15 record, and lose for only the second time in 16 NCAA-II regional championship games. Mules Recap »

Matlock receives more post-season honors
Chris Matlock is the 2009 ABCA / Rawlings All-South Central Region "Pitcher of the Year", and one of three Mules players to receive recognition on the squad. Matlock is joined on the first-team by outfielder Chance Tuttle, while pitcher Nick Phillips was a second-team selection.

Mules rally to tie, but stumble in championship round
The Mules battled back from a six-run deficit in Sunday's MIAA Tournament championship game, only to fall 12-9 to Nebraska-Omaha when the Mavericks plated three runs in the top of the ninth inning. The loss at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan., marked only the third time in the past 16 years that the Mules haven't won the conference tournament title.

Stewart Hoover (pictured above) launches a three-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game at 9-9, as the Mules scored six unanswered runs after trailing 9-3. The Mavericks were able to get to Chris Matlock for three runs in the top of the ninth to earn the title and automatic bid from the MIAA to the NCAA-II South-Central Regional.
The Mules (41-13) have posted at least 40 wins in 11 consecutive seasons, and the two victories Saturday in the conference tournament pushed the Mules win total in this decade to 500.
