Mules ranked in four national polls
University of Central Missouri Mules basketball was picked in the national top five in two more polls this week, making them the only team in the MIAA to appear in all four NCAA Division II preseason polls. The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) poll, which is recognized as the primary ranking list throughout the year, selected UCM as the No. 5 team in the country, while Basketball Times picked the Mules at No. 3.
Sporting News selected the Mules at No. 3, while Division II Bulletin put UCM at No. 14 during the first week of October. Central Missouri was also picked to win the MIAA by the conference media, and to finish second in the league by the conference coaches.
Individually, senior forward Sanijay Watts was picked as a preseason honorable mention All-American by two publications. He was named the 10th All-American in school history last season after leading the team with 15.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, as well as shooting 55.5 percent from the field.
The Mules come into 2009-10 with three returning starters in senior guard Alex Moosmann, senior forward Tremaine Luellen, and Watts. They finished the season 30-5 overall last year, winning the MIAA Tournament title, the South Central Region Championship, and advancing to their second NCAA-II Final Four in the last three seasons.
