“In my [counseling] practice I have to be very culturally sensitive. I work with a
diverse population of children, teens and families dealing with a variety of mental
health challenges. [GSS] taught me how to ensure that I make all of my clients know
that they are in an inclusive environment.”
Meet Vanessa B.
Women’s and Gender Studies minor, ‘21
“During my time as a [GSS] student, I unknowingly learned a vast knowledge of soft
skills that put me leagues ahead of other candidates who had the same majors/background
experience as I did. [GSS] not only aided me in seeing the perceptions of others but
provided me the tools to manage/lead others through the many psychology-driven courses
I took.”
Meet Gracen L.
Gender and Sexuality Studies minor, ‘23
“I always felt love and acceptance throughout my time in the WGS/GSS program. I enjoyed
everything I learned and I have taken many things from the program that I use in my
personal and professional career in the legal field.”
Meet Vicki S.
Gender and Sexuality Studies minor, ‘23
"Working in the mental health field, identity is really at the center of the work
I do. [GSS] provided me with a really solid foundation for cultural humility and
competency by expanding my perspectives on how lived experience differs across identities
and also taught me how to seek out further understanding through research, conversation
and action. [GSS] not only educated me on the identities of others, but also myself.
Having a strong sense of self-awareness about my social locations and how they affect
my perspectives, values, etc. has been essential to discovering who I am as a counselor
and evaluating how I interact with and am perceived by my clients. [GSS] helped me
develop cultural literacy and advocacy that I use and will continue to use throughout
my career."
