What you will study
Learn practical skills and gain understanding as you work toward your bachelor’s degree
in Occupational Safety - Occupational Health Management at the University of Central
Missouri. Core coursework explores industrial hygiene, ergonomics in safety and health,
transportation and storage of hazardous materials, safety and health legislation and
standards, industrial fire protection and more.
Among the courses for UCM’s Occupational Safety - Occupational Health Management degree
option are:
- Elementary Organic and Biochemistry: Get an introduction to organic chemistry and the fundamental concepts of biochemistry
with emphasis on its physiological, nutritional and comparative aspects.
- Noise Measurements: Learn about physics of sound, measurement and control of noise.
- Industrial Ventilation for Environmental Safety and Health: Understand how ventilation systems are designed to control health and safety hazards
in work environments, with a focus on the design of local exhaust systems.
Course delivery for the Occupational Health Management degree
UCM’s bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety - Occupational Health Management is
open to full- and part-time students. All courses are offered on campus in Warrensburg,
Missouri. You may also opt to take some courses in hybrid and online formats. All
summer courses are available online.
Regardless of which format you choose, all of our courses in occupational safety are
taught by experienced faculty. Active in professional organizations and groups, our
faculty frequently present at industry conferences and workshops, raising awareness
of the value of a degree in occupational safety and health.

- UCM's Occupational Safety BS program, including the Occupational Health Management
degree option, is accredited by the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission
of ABET. Graduates from ABET-accredited programs have a proven educational foundation

UCM’s Occupational Safety - Occupational Health Management degree gives you hands-on
experience with lab and field technology, paid internships and applied learning projects.
- Internships: Get practical experience and earn course credit with an internship. Opportunities
are available through our alumni engagement program, faculty networks and industry
connections. Many students are hired as full-time employees after they graduate as
a result of their internship experiences.
- Learning lab: UCM’s Occupational Safety - Occupational Health Management program is home to one
of the top labs in the United States, providing access to the latest equipment and
techniques.
- Industry connections: In nearby Kansas City are active chapters of the American Society of Safety Professionals
(ASSP) and the American Industrial Hygiene Association. Occupational safety majors
can join peers, faculty and industry professionals at educational, professional and
networking events.
What can you do with a degree in Occupational Safety and Health Management from UCM?
Working in the fields of occupational safety and occupational health management, you’ll
analyze health and safety risk factors in the workplace that impact employees’ health,
then recommend solutions to reduce their exposure to those hazards. Upon graduation,
you’ll receive the GSP designation and be prepared for safety and occupational health
jobs in utilities, manufacturing, oil and gas, transportation, construction, insurance,
government and many other industries.
You may also choose graduate school. The University of Central Missouri offers an
accelerated BS to MS pathway with the MS in Occupational Safety Management program,
as well as an MS degree in Industrial Hygiene.
Most of our undergraduate students complete their bachelor’s degree within four years.
They work in jobs with a degree in occupational safety and health management to identify
and interpret standards, regulations and codes, apply scientific and technical tools
to impact safety and health and demonstrate the value of safety, health and environmental
science interventions.
