Unique learning opportunities in corrections
We know it’s important to understand how to apply your classroom skills to the real
world. The University of Central Missouri provides engaging ways for you to gain work
experience before you graduate.
- Internships: Participate in a paid internship through our agreement with the Missouri Department
of Corrections and the Department of Youth Services within the Missouri Department
of Social Services. You may get to help with case management, work with custody staff,
mentor youth and gain firsthand knowledge about administrative operations within a
correctional facility.
- Field trips: Take classroom excursions to correctional institutions and mental health facilities
across the state to get up-close exposure to classroom concepts in action.

The Corrections minor at the University of Central Missouri prepares you with the
skills and knowledge to succeed in any correctional setting. You’ll be ready to work
with groups ranging from minors to adults in locations such as jails, prisons, community
agencies and juvenile facilities.
UCM alumni with a Corrections minor work in a wide variety of positions within the
Missouri Department of Corrections, including the Division of Adult Institutions and
the Division of Probation and Parole. Their roles include corrections officers, supervisors
and wardens.

Meet Faculty Member Dr. Scott Chenault
Certified corrections professional
Dr. Chenault worked for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services as a certified
corrections officer. He shares his experience in the field with students in courses
such as Corrections and Institutional Operations. Dr. Chenault focuses his research
on the qualitative analysis of correctional officer experiences and correctional programming.

Meet Faculty Member Dr. Gregg Etter
Extensive law enforcement experience
Dr. Etter draws on his time as a jail administrator to give students a first-hand
account of what it’s like working in corrections. In addition to that experience,
he spent almost 30 years with the Sedgwick County (Kansas) Sheriff’s Office and is
a certified Professional Gang Expert Level 3 through the National Gang Crime Research
Center.
