- Training and networking: UCM Statistics students participate in events hosted by the Kansas-Western Missouri
Chapter of the American Statistical Association. Annual chapter meetings include career
days and hands-on training in statistical methods and the latest software.
- UCM Statistics Club: This student club welcomes Statistics majors and minors in addition to UCM students
who are simply interested in the discipline. The club invites statistics experts and
alumni to give presentations on campus and provides students with volunteer opportunities
for hands-on learning outside the classroom.

Meet Professor Phoebe McLaughlin
Department chair, Mathematics
Dr. McLaughlin holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Iowa. She supervises
and coordinates a variety of undergraduate courses and teaches Basic Statistics, Introduction
to Probability and Probability Models classes in the Statistics minor. You’ll benefit
from her leadership, teaching expertise and long history of mentoring Mathematics
and Statistics students.
Meet Professor Paul Plummer
Assistant instructor, Statistics
Dr. Plummer has a Ph.D. in Statistics and Economics from the University of Missouri.
He teaches introductory and upper-level undergraduate Statistics courses, including
Statistics and Data Analysis and Regression Analysis. You’ll gain a wealth of knowledge
from his vast teaching and student advising experience and benefit from his involvement
in regional statistics associations.
Meet Professor Trang Bui
Assistant professor, Actuarial Science
Dr. Bui has a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and teaches courses in both statistics
and mathematics. She focuses her research on applied probability, stochastic processes,
stochastic differential equations and mathematical ecology, among others.
Meet Professor Lianwen Wang
Professor, Statistics and Mathematics
Dr. Wang has a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Wayne State University. His research
interests focus on statistics, control and optimization and differential equations.
He has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals and serves as editor for
the Missouri Journal of Mathematical Sciences.
The Actuarial Organization (TAO)
The Actuarial Organization (TAO) serves students who are majoring or interested in
actuarial science. The organization is academic in nature and holds activities ranging
from career fairs to guest speakers.
