Elementary school teachers are…elementary! They are essential and fundamental to the
success of the children they serve. Elementary teachers provide the academic foundation
for a lifetime. They get to be the first to introduce new skills and ideas to children.
They get to teach a variety of subjects; no monotony here! Every day is an adventure
into biology, geography, or story-telling. With a teacher’s support, young children
become readers, authors, mathematicians, scientists, and historians. They come to
school ready to learn and with the right teacher they continue down that path for
their educational careers.
Elementary teachers love learning. They love to learn information for themselves.
They are avid readers, reading and learning about how to improve their practice, how to support children, and how to make tomorrow
a better place in their classroom and in the world. They seek opportunities to listen
to talk to expert teachers and about their work. They share their love of learning
and gathering information with their students. Children see their enthusiasm for learning
and that spark becomes contagious.
Elementary teachers know academics are important but learning how to be a good friend,
citizen, and peer are equally important. Elementary teachers develop meaningful relationships
with their young students. They teach them how to care, share, listen, and learn.
It is true, everything you needed to know you learned in Kindergarten. Don’t jump
the line in front of an elementary teacher. They will let you know that is not how
we do things!
Being an elementary teacher is an avocation, not a job. Elementary teachers are passionate
about their children. They seek to provide the best education for every child. They
develop a special bond with their students. They watch them grow during the time they
have them and get to watch them progress through grades beyond. Many children return
to a favorite elementary teacher years after they were together. Not many professionals
can say that. Be that person for someone else…with a classroom of students every year
be that for many someone elses.
UCM has a CAEP-accredited elementary education program. Check it out today!
