Face-to-Face English Programs

Program Descriptions

The English Language Institute offers various face-to-face programs:

  • Aviation English Certificate Program
  • Business English Programs
  • Teacher training
  • Special programs and camps including American Culture Exploration Immersion Program (ACE), Missouriana Program, Newcomer Program, and build your own program

Aviation English Program (Face-to-Face)

The English Language Institute's Aviation English Program prepares students to meet and exceed the Level-4 ICAO rating to comply with the FAA regulations.

The program consists of one course in aviation structure, vocabulary, and comprehension; one course in aviation pronunciation, fluency, and interactions; and an optional specialization course upon completion of the required courses.

It is recommended that students also enroll in the CEA-accredited Intensive English Program to strengthen their overall English abilities. 

Program Highlights

The program's courses feature engaging instruction and practice with plain English voice-only communication, terminology, pronunciation, and more in an aviation context.

English Language Immersion Activities

Students will be able to participate in ELI-sponsored activities on campus. Off-campus activities and trips to surrounding cities for social, cultural, educational, and shopping excursions will be provided during the program.

Weekly Schedule and Credit

Students are enrolled at UCM in a zero credit hour, short-term program. Classes meet Monday through Thursday for eight weeks. Students will receive a UCM grade report as well as a program certificate of completion.

The Aviation English Program (face-to-face) courses are available for an add-on price of $450.00 in addition to Intensive English Program tuition.

Corporate managers networking

English for Corporate Managers (Face-to-Face)

This business English program consists of 2 courses, each lasting 6 weeks. It is designed for managers and executives in the corporate environment who want to improve their interpersonal communication skills in face-to-face or virtual settings, presentation skills, report writing and electronic communications. The focus is on vocabulary, grammar, and American negotiation skills in a corporate setting. Certificate of Successful Completion awarded.

Course Descriptions

Corporate English for Managers I: This course focuses on developing the range of vocabulary and strengthening of grammar skills (e.g. in correspondence, reports, and presentations) of the corporate executive. Interpersonal communication skills for both formal and informal settings as well as for virtual environments are introduced. It is designed for executives wishing to refine broader vocabulary, situational English communication, and presentation skills.

Corporate English for Managers II: CEM II builds on CEM I. This course focuses on enhancing English for report-writing and on showing more effective communication during virtual and face-to-face meetings. Active listening skills and language for negotiation skills are honed for more meaningful and culturally-sensitive discussion in both formal and informal settings. For executives with advanced-level English skills.

  • The courses meet two times per week with 1.5 hours per class.
  • The classes are offered online or face-to-face (on-site or at the Missouri Innovation Campus in Lee's Summit, Missouri).

English for Administrative Assistants (Face-to-Face)

This business English program consists of 2 courses, each lasting 6 weeks. It is designed for administrative assistants in the business environment who want to improve their speaking and writing skills for inter-office and public communication. The focus is on phone and e-mail English, letter writing, grammar, and pronunciation. Certificate of Successful Completion awarded.

Course Descriptions

English for Administrative Assistants I: This course introduces vocabulary and guides administrative staff to identify circumstances which specific spoken and written "types" of English are necessary to build effective communication for inter-office and public exchanges. Intermediate level of English needed.

English for Administrative Assistants II: EAAII builds on EAAI goals. This course enhances administrative staff abilities to speak and write using work-appropriate English in public and inter/intra office communication. Staff will develop a portfolio of templates for English phrasing in e-mails and reports. High-intermediate to Advanced level of English needed.

Teacher Training

  • Gain experience with syllabus, lesson planning, and assessment creation
  • Observe experienced ESL instructors
  • Teach and be observed weekly with a practicum supervisor
  • Develop leadership skills within the English Language Institute
  • Choose a Practicum Apprenticeship level that fits your needs
  • Receive a certificate of completion 

Practicum Apprenticeship Levels

Level 2: Intermediate Apprenticeship, $250.00

Teacher's Aid: 12-15 hours plus 5 observation hours and 5 tutorial hours

An intermediate apprenticeship is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who do not have ESL teacher training. These apprentices will likely travel abroad and teach in the next year and need a short-term, limited practical experience. They will teach some parts of classes under supervision.

Level 3: Advanced Apprenticeship, $350.00

Teacher's Assistant: 15-20 hours plus 5 observation hours and 8-10 tutorial hours

An advanced apprenticeship is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who may or may not have ESL teacher training. These apprentices are planning to work abroad for an extended period of time within the next few years. They will utilize half of their hours working towards qualifications (SLA methods, Assessment, Lesson-Planning, and Error Correction) as an ESL Teacher's Assistant. They will teach half or more of their classes with limited supervision.

American Culture Exploration Immersion Program (ACE)

The University of Central Missouri’s American Culture Exploration Spring Immersion Program (ACE) is designed for students ages 15-25 who have an intermediate level of English proficiency. This program provides students with an opportunity to learn about American culture in a welcoming and comfortable environment while improving English skills and establishing meaningful friendships.

Program Highlights:

  • On-campus sports, clubs and team activities
  • Local historical and cultural activities
  • Weekly social, cultural, educational and shopping excursions
  • 20 hours per week English language training
  • Official UCM camp certificates and program report

About the Program

  • ACE access to the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, the James C. Kirkpatrick Library, sporting events and dining halls
  • Suite or apartment-style Housing
  • Airport pick-up, orientation and support services
  • On-site Health Center
  • American cultural activities
  • 20 hours per week English language training

Missouriana Program

The University of Central Missouri’s Missouriana Program is designed for college-age students who have a high-intermediate level of English proficiency. This program provides students with an opportunity to learn about Mid-west and American culture, with a focus on experiential learning and cultural comparisons.

Program Highlights:

  • Weekly activities, trips, and events focused on learning about American Culture
  • Access to Recreation Center, Library, and UCM events
  • Certificate of completion
  • Leveled classrooms (beginning, intermediate, advanced)

Language and Culture Program Sessions

Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking

US Culture: discussion, film, activities, and events to better understand why United States people do what they do. Includes historical and other factors that led to the development of cultural values in the United States. Includes activities, day trips, and cultural events.

Transportation, Orientation, and Housing

Students will be picked up at the MCI Airport and will reside in UCM residence halls during the program. A program orientation will be provided upon arrival.

The ELI Newcomer Program is designed for immigrants and visitors to the United States who are interested in improving their English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
