A consummate educator, Steve Petersen is taking advantage of his retirement from Central Missouri to launch a new career. After serving the campus for more than 24 years, Petersen recently became associate vice president for Alumni Relations and Development at Saint Louis University.
Becoming a vice president at CMSU at the age of 38, he provided leadership for the second largest division at the institution behind Academic Affairs. He oversaw areas such as Student Life, Campus Advocate for Students, Judicial Affairs, Child Care Center, Campus Activities, Career Services, University Health Services, Accessibility Services, Housing and Residential Life, Campus Dining Services, Elliot Union, and Facilities and Conference Services. He also served as the administrative liaison to the Professional Staff Council, the Support Staff Council and the Emeriti Association.
Twice during his career at CMSU, Petersen served as vice president for University Advancement on an interim basis. For three years in the mid-1990s, Alumni Relations was also part of the Students Affairs Division.
A former Fulbright Scholar, in 2001 he received the American College Personnel Association’s Diamond Honoree Award for outstanding leadership and contributions to his profession. He also received the Missouri College Personnel Association’s Richard Caple Award in 2002 for his professional contributions.
Petersen studied at Indiana University, where he earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
