For more than three decades, Dr. Steven H. Mills shared his love for science with hundreds of students who passed through his classroom at Central.
The professor emeritus of biology joined the Department of Biology and Earth Science in 1972. From his early role as assistant professor, he took on new responsibilities and climbed the faculty ranks to full professor in 1984. He became chair of the department in 1998 andd served in that capacity until his retirement. He has taught on an adjunct basis since the spring 2003 semester.
Dr. Mills wrote many grants and was involved in professional societies for individuals who have interests in teaching biology, as well as the study and practice of physiology and zoology. He was active in the Missouri Academy of Science, and began serving a three-year term as secretary in 1998. This was in addition to serving the academy through committee work and activities such as chairing its Environmental Science and Biology sections.
Dr. Mills fostered opportunities for students to obtain valuable service learning experiences. During the summers of 2002 and 2003, for example, he led small groups of pre-medicine students to a free medical clinic in Jamaica to help them learn about medical care in a third world country.
His higher education began at Southwest Missouri State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. He earned master’s and doctoral degrees in physiology from the University of Illinois-Urbana.
