Having a strong commitment to Central and its students, Dr. William E. (Bill) McCandless spent his entire career as a professional educator on this campus. Even in retirement, he has demonstrated his desire to contribute to the institution by accepting a temporary post as acting chair of the Department of Music, a position he has held since July 1.
The professor emeritus of music takes pride in the role he has played in the careers of many successful students who have gone on to prestigious graduate schools and to careers in teaching and performance. He joined the Department of Music faculty in 1969 after earning two degrees from Central, the Bachelor of Music in organ performance and the Master of Arts in Music with a theory emphasis. He earned a Ph.D. in music theory at Indiana State University.
In addition to teaching, Dr. McCandless served as assistant to the department chair from 1989-1996. He served the university through a variety of committee assignments, including Curriculum, Budget and Promotion and Tenure committees within the College of Arts and Sciences and the Curriculum, General Education and Faculty Personnel Policies committees at the university level.
Dr McCandless served as president of Alpha Mu Chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda National Honor Society in Music, and he managed the Missouri State High School Activities Association District Music Festival at Central for 20 years. He was the president of the Missouri Music Teachers Association, 1991-1993.
