UCM Music to Present Recital Spotlighting Female Composers

The University of Central Missouri (UCM) Division of Music will present a recital featuring female composers at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21 in Hart Recital Hall in the Utt Building.

“I Hold My Soul: Music by Women Composers” will offer solo and duet music performances that spotlight female composers Edie Hill, Undine Smith Moore, Margaret Bonds, Florence Price, Maria Malibran, Augusta Holmés, and Lili and Nadia Boulanger.

Dr. Jake Sentgeorge, tenor, presents this recital with Dr. Mia Kim, piano, and special guest Dr. Courtney Fletcher, mezzo-soprano. 

“These incredible songs and duets by female composers deserve to be performed widely,” Sentgeorge said. “They show how much tremendous music was disregarded by the misogynist decision-makers of their time. The duets span the Romantic era to the 20th century, and the solo songs run from the WWI era to current times.”

Sentgeorge, a professor of Voice at UCM since 2008, has performed as a tenor soloist in a broad range of performances in the United States, Canada, Brazil and Italy. He has premiered several new works in addition to his own compositions for voice and electronics. He has taught Applied Voice, Diction, and Vocal Literature and directed opera workshops and musical theatre productions. 

Kim is a Piano and Piano Pedagogy professor and the Community Music Program director at UCM. She made her professional debut with the Indianapolis Symphony at age 12 and has since performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the U.S. In January, Kim performed at the historic Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Kim frequently appears as a clinician and adjudicator across America and in several other countries. She is highly involved in the music culture across Missouri, including being the founder and current president of the Warrensburg Friends of Music.

Fletcher is an assistant professor of Voice at the University of Kansas who has taught various genres, including classical, musical theater, jazz, pop and folk. In 2022, she was selected as one of 12 young teachers from the U.S. and Canada to participate in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Intern Program. She is the 2024 third place winner of the NATS Artist Awards. 

As a performer, Fletcher has traveled domestically and internationally for various operatic roles and performances. In January, she will perform her role debut as Giovanna Seymour in “Anna Bolena” with Winter Opera St. Louis.
