Iske Recognized by the American Industrial Hygiene Association with the Henry F. Smyth, Jr. Award

WARRENSBURG, MO – S. D. Allen Iske, Jr., professor of safety sciences in the School of Environmental, Physical and Applied Sciences in the College of Health, Science, and Technology at the University of Central Missouri, has been named the recipient of the 2016 Henry F. Smyth, Jr. Award by the American Industrial Hygiene Association.

The honor is presented annually to an industry professional in recognition of significant career contributions the industrial hygiene profession the improvement of public welfare. Iske will receive the award at the 2016 AIHA Fall Conference Oct. 24–25 in San Antonio, Texas. As this year’s recipient, he also will present the annual Henry F. Smyth, Jr. Award Lecture at the conference.

“This is amazing and most appreciated,” Iskesaid. “This recognition makes me feel very honored and humble. Some of the past recipients of this prestigious national award have been founders of the industrial hygiene profession, past presidents of AIHA, past Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health, and other prominent leaders.I am most honored to be included as a recipient with these distinguished past honorees.”

In addition to the Henry F. Smyth, Jr. Award, Iske also received the Harriotte A. Hurley Award from the AIHA Analytical Accreditation Board in March 2016 as the outstanding board member for the past year. He also receivede the 2016 AIHA Volunteer Group Service Award through the organization’s Sampling and Laboratory Analysis Committee in May 2016 for his contributions in leadership and standardization of monitoring methods for sampling and analysis. His achievements also include the American Society for Testing and Materials Award of Merit (Fellow of the Society), the ASTM Committee D22 Lifetime Achievement Award, and the ASTM Committee D22 Moyer D. Thomas Award.

Iske was named an AIHA Fellow in 2008, and he has participated in the efforts of the AIHA throughout his career. He served as editor of the fifth edition of the AIHA Laboratory Quality Assurance Manual in 2015, and he previously authored chapters for two earlier editions of the publication. He also is involved in international standards development activities as the official liaison from AIHA through the Sampling and Laboratory Analysis Committee for the ASTM D22 Committee on Air Quality and the ISO/TC US 146 Technical Advisory Group on Air Quality.

Iske received a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and served as a visiting research associate, postdoctoral appointment, at The Ohio State University.
