WARRENSBURG, MO – The family of University of Central Missouri freshman Jose Calderon,
Independence, was named the UCM Family of the Year as part of UCM’s annual Family
Weekend Sept. 15-17.
Calderon and his family were recognized during the Sept. 16 football game between
the UCM Mules and the Missouri Western State University Griffons. Calderon, his parents,
Manuel and Connie Calderon of Independence, and his sister, Alejandra and her boyfriend,
Steven, attended the game. They also were recognized Saturday evening during the Family
Weekend Talent Show.
In the essay he wrote nominating his family for the honor, Calderon acknowledged the
impact family has had on him. A native of Mexico, his father emigrated to the United
States, where his work ethic has allowed him to be successful. His mother, Connie,
also works full time while raising Calderon and his sisters. He acknowledged his sisters
for providing him with the experiences that helped him appreciate being part of a
close family.
The Family of the Year selected and introduced annually during the UCM Family Weekend
celebration. Students may nominate their families, submitting an essay with their
nomination. This is the 17th year for the honor, sponsored by the UCM United Student
Housing Association.
In addition to a cash prize, the Calderon family received tickets for the weekend
football game and pre-game activities and t-shirts courtesy of the UCM University
Store.
