Physical Relocation of Learning Commons, Virtual Programs, Enhances Access

WARRENSBURG, MO – An area that plays an instrumental role in helping University of Central Missouri students succeed in their college education, the Learning Commons, often referred to as the “learning center,” has been relocated to the first floor of the James C. Kirkpatrick Library.

 

Previously housed in JCKL 3160, the Learning Commons this summer moved to JCKL 1250, which was the former location for the Computer Commons, a facility that provides students with access to computers and software to assist with their university studies. The majority of these specialty software computers have been transitioned to JCKL 3160 and the remaining technology items will be distributed between the second and third floors of the library for use in addition to the computers that are already present. The opportunity to relocate the Learning Commons provides a convenient spot for students to access a number of free services on the ground level, while also initiating measures that support a safe and healthy campus environment.

 

Services offered at the Learning Commons cover tutoring in many courses offered by UCM; supplemental instruction to help students who are struggling with difficult courses in areas such as math and science; and the Writing Center, where students can get help writing class papers.

 

Chris Beggs, executive director of Academic Support Services, said his office considered moving the Learning Commons in cooperation with JCKL leadership over the past several months in an effort to make the facility more accessible to students. COVID-19 also has provided the impetus to enhance efforts to provide services online at times that are most convenient for students.
