WARRENSBURG, MO – The University of Central Missouri Career Services Center has announced plans to host two virtual career expos in September that are specifically
targeted toward degree programs within two UCM academic colleges in addition to other
August and September activities that will be of interest to a wide range of other
students.
Included in the fall semester lineup is the Harmon College of Business and Professional
Studies Virtual Career Expo, Sept. 9, and the College of Health, Science and Technology
Career Expo Thursday, Sept. 10. Career Services has designed these events to make
it possible for students to connect with employers who are actively hiring for positions
directly related to their majors. Graduates and professional schools will also participate
in the event, providing answers to questions about their programs and application
processes.
According to Joni Porter, employer relations representative at the Career Center,
attending a career expo is an ideal time for students to meet professionals in their
industry or major, ask questions, distribute resumes, and explore a multitude of career
opportunities. All students are encouraged to attend, regardless of class status.
Underclassmen will find these events to be beneficial as they will provide an outlook
on the job market. Juniors and seniors, or anyone interested in pursuing employment
(full-time or internship) opportunities, should activate their Handshake account,
upload a current resume and complete their profile information, she said.
The Career Services Center will provide informational webinars to help guide students
through the process and will be available to assist students during the event. Technology
will also be available in the computer lab on the second floor of the Ward Edwards
Building for students who do not have a device to connect online.
Additional Career Services virtual events include:
- Vital Tips to Make the Most Out of Your Virtual Career Expo Experience; 4 p.m. Aug.
25
- Students at UCM… Get Ready for the Expo; 1-4 p.m. Sept. 2. This virtual event is designed
to train students on how to navigate a virtual career expo while also addressing questions
and issues related to: the differences between one-on-one (1:1) and group sessions,
as well as interview and resume coaching.
- Dine Like a Pro, Eat Like Your Future Career Depends on It, 4-5 p.m. Sept. 23
As Handshake is an important tool in helping students to find jobs and explore career
options, students are encouraged to download this application through IOS or the Google
Play Store. They can also access it at ucmo.joinhandshake.com. Doing so gives students an opportunity to see which employers plan to attend the
career expos and sign-up for 1:1 or group sessions.
Prior to attending an expo, students should do the following:
- Register for the Career Expo of their choice (or both)
- Sign up for group or 1:1 sessions prior to the day of the expo
- Be sure privacy settings are on “Community”
- Check out the attending employers
- Complete or update their Handshake profile
- Upload a resume to their profile
Students who need assistance or do not have a personal device can come to the second
floor of Ward Edwards Building computer lab where they can utilize computers and receive
assistance in navigating the event.
