Grounds
The beautiful flowers and trees seen around campus are planted and maintained by the Grounds Maintenance Department. There are 634 campus acres that are cared for by the FPO Grounds department; the remainder of the 1571 acres are primarily used as leased farm land and airport property.
The Grounds department is responsible for maintenance of all turf, trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, parking lots, roadways, and sidewalks. They maintain Walton Stadium, Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field as well as a championship soccer field, south Recreation Complex and 12 other outdoor fields.
Other responsibilities include snow removal, setting up outside events, care of indoor campus plants, and installing sign posts. The grounds crew consists of a supervisor, foreperson and 10 full-time grounds workers.
Health and safety is our primary concern. We provide a planned program of landscape and grounds care that includes turf and intramural sports field maintenance, shrub and tree maintenance, new landscaping plantings, non-potable irrigation system maintenance, road and walkway cleaning, exterior landscape pest control, green waste recycling, tree trimming and removal.
Snow Removal
Campus areas are broken down into priorities and cleared based off of their ranking. The map to the left shows the areas receiving first priority. Parking lots, then the remaining areas of campus will be treated subsequently. Our crews begin to plow once snow accumulation has reached one inch on campus surfaces.
We have contracted services to assist UCM in ensuring that we have a safe environment for our students, faculty and staff. Sidewalks and parking lots are pre-treated based upon forecasted storm predictions.
UCM’s snow plow operators work diligently around the clock in extreme conditions to keep motorists safe and ensure that police, fire, and EMS personnel can get to those who need assistance. Although our operators are careful and continuously working, always use caution during icy and snowy conditions.
Please move vehicles off the street whenever possible. Parked cars pose an obstruction to snow removal operations during the storm and then leave snow packed areas after they are moved.
