Crime Victim Information

What do I do if I'm a victim of a crime?

All crimes occurring on campus should be reported to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) at 306 Broad St. or by calling 911 or (660)543-4123.

Crimes occurring off campus, but within the city limits of Warrensburg should be reported to the Warrensburg Police Department, located at 102 S. Holden St., or by calling (660)747-9134.

Crimes occurring in Johnson County should be reported to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department at 278 SW 871, Centerview, or by calling (660)747-6469.

Victims may wish to allow DPS, Office of Student Experience and Engagement, or the Counseling Center to assist them in notifying the proper jurisdictional authorities.

 

Information About Specific Crimes

Sexual Assault

Victims of sexual assault should get medical attention as soon as possible by calling 911, contacting the University Health Center at (660)543-4770, or Western Missouri Medical Center (WMMC) at (660)747-2500. WMMC is located east of campus on Burkarth Rd. Physical evidence of the assault may also be collected by medical personnel.

Victims may access services after hours by contacting the 24-hour crisis line at the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA) at (816)531-0233.Victims may choose to contact the appropriate police agency, Student Experience & Engagement, or if the crime occurred in the University Housing system, University Housing staff. It is important to preserve evidence in the event criminal charges are pursued.

If a victim chooses to pursue on-campus disciplinary procedures, this may be done regardless of what the victim may wish to do about criminal charges. During a campus disciplinary proceeding, the accuser and the accused are entitled to the same opportunities to have others present. Additionally, both the accuser and the accused shall be informed of the outcome of any campus disciplinary proceeding alleging a sexual assault.

Sanctions imposed for rape or other sex offenses following an on-campus disciplinary proceeding may range from counseling to expulsion and are explained in the Calendar/Handbook under Description of Disciplinary Actions and Disciplinary Process and Procedural Rights. If a victim chooses to pursue criminal charges, all offenses occurring on campus will be investigated by DPS officers and investigators.

Victims of sexual assault may wish to seek help and support through counseling. Clinicians at the University Counseling Center are available for emergency consultations with students. If the student wishes, DPS officers will assist in making these arrangements. Students may also contact the Counseling Center in Administration 102 or at (660)543-4060.

Local counseling is also available through volunteers trained in rape crisis intervention. The 24-hour survival hotline is (660)429-2847.Victims who wish to make changes in academic and living situations after an alleged sexual assault, providing such options are reasonably available, should contact the Provost’s office (Administration 105) to request academic changes.

Students living in university housing may contact the Office of University Housing at (660)543-4515 for changes in living situations.

 

Domestic Violence

If injury is possible or apparent, call 911 or contact the University Health Center or WMMC (660)747-2500 for medical treatment. Victims can report the incident to the police from the hospital or at the scene. All criminal offenses will be investigated by DPS officers. On-campus disciplinary proceedings are described in the calendar/handbook.

Victim services are available through Survival House. Victim advocates may be reached by calling (660)429-1088 or (660)429-2847. Arrangements for transportation, shelter, and other needs are available in Warrensburg. Students may also contact the Counseling Center in Administration 102, or by calling (660)543-4060. Emergency consultations may be arranged through DPS officers.

If you witness domestic violence on campus, notify DPS at (660)543-4123 or 911.

 

Assault

If injury is possible or apparent, call 911 or contact the University Health Center or WMMC (660)747-2500 for medical treatment. All assaults on campus will be investigated by DPS.

Call (660)543-4123 to request an officer to respond. On-campus disciplinary proceedings are described in the calendar/handbook.

 

Theft

All on-campus thefts should be reported to DPS at 306 Broad St. or by calling (660)543-4123. Students are encouraged to maintain documentation of descriptions and serial numbers of their property. Stolen property cannot be entered into the national computer as stolen without serial numbers. Entering the property in the computer increases the likelihood of the property being located. Students are also encouraged to purchase renter’s insurance, if their property is not already covered under an existing policy.

Most of the thefts on campus are opportunity thefts. Students are encouraged not to leave their property unattended, or their doors unlocked, even to visit in the same hallway, or to leave for a short time.

 

Harassing Phone Calls

Harassing phone calls occurring on campus should be reported to DPS at (660)543-4123. Students may request a trace be placed on their phone. If the victim is willing to pursue criminal charges, the victim may request to have a trace put on their telephone. The victim is required to sign a request for trace form. The victim must agree to assist in prosecution, regardless of the outcome of the investigation.
