ABC News Veteran, 'What Would You Do?' Host, John Quiñones, to Visit UCM

John Quiñones, ABC News veteran and creator and host of the popular “What Would You Do?” nationally televised program, will speak at the University of Central Missouri Wednesday, Feb. 23. His free presentation, made possible by the Center for Multiculturalism and Inclusivity, is open to the public and is the first talk in what the center hopes will become many conversations with distinguished visitors to UCM in the months ahead. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend this event at 7 p.m. in Nahm Auditorium, located in the W.C. Morris Science Building.

VTR Gift Supports Aviation Student in Seeking Commercial Pilot Certification

The University of Central Missouri’s role in helping to address a national pilot shortage and to fill other vital positions in the aviation field through training is benefitting from the School of Aviation’s relationships with organizations that share the same interest. Among such groups, VTR (Visionary Training Resources) recently made a financial gift to help a UCM student reduce a portion of the expenses needed toward earning a Commercial Pilot Certificate.

Board Authorizes Change in Aviation Flight Fees, Naming of Building Space

In its special plenary session Jan. 27, the University of Central Missouri Board of Governors approved an increase in aviation fixed wing flight fees and established an aviation fuel surcharge. This was in addition to authorizing an agreement for on-call fence services, the naming of a space for future renovation in the Lovinger Building, and approving updates for the university’s strategic plan.

While the challenge of getting into college can be stressful, additional anxiety often accompanies a decision overload with students pondering which degree to pursue, and what they want to do with it once they graduate. Through initiatives that have been shared with educators across the United States, the University of Central Missouri is helping students tackle these tough decisions and more by incorporating design thinking principles into the student experience. The result of such efforts at UCM is a range of new opportunities from career readiness courses and learning facility upgrades to presentations that introduce this model for solving what researchers have called the “wicked problems” individuals may face in education, life and in making decisions about careers.
