Frequently Asked Questions

How do I schedule an appointment to get help?

The Learning Commons is using a new app called Penji. Students can log-in and search for help by course.

What is Penji?

Penji is a scheduling application that was designed specifically for campus learning centers. It is meant to more easily connect students to peer support on campus.

How do I get Penji?

Great question! You can download Penji on your phone through your app store (iOS, Android). It is also available as a website on desktop or mobile devices.

Do I need to make an account?

When you sign into Penji for the first time, you will see a prompt to use your UCM Single Sign-On. Easy peasy!

So, what does the app do?

Through the Penji app, you can see when tutors are available to support you in your courses. You can schedule appointments, upload documents prior to the tutoring session, and communicate with your tutor using the app.

Where do I go once I’m in the app?

We have two academic support communities you can join at UCM. The first is the Learning Commons, where you can find subject tutors, sign up for Supplemental Instruction sessions if you have an SI Leader in your course, or join an available test review for an upcoming exam. We also have the Writing Center community, where you can find a tutor to help you with your writing assignments - whether you’re just getting started or putting on the finishing touches.

Do I need to make an appointment?

While an appointment will secure you a spot with a specific tutor and/or at a specific time, you can always choose the “Drop-In Tutoring” option. You will enter a first-come, first-served queue. You’ll be able to see available tutors and tell whether there is anybody ahead of you in the line.

Are there any limits to what I can sign up for?

Tutoring and Writing Center appointments can be scheduled in 30 or 60-minute increments. You are limited to signing up to 2 hours per day and 5 hours per week.

If you schedule an appointment and you suddenly become unable to attend, you can use the app to cancel your appointment before it takes place, no strings attached. We do ask that you do this for two reasons: 1) It will open that time back up for someone else who needs help to schedule an appointment, and 2) Repeated appointment no-shows are grounds for a temporary suspension from the Learning Commons.

This sounds like a wonderful virtual tool, but is it just for online help?

Nope! We are using this tool to schedule all of our academic support. If you drop into the Learning Commons as in the past, we’ll log you in using Penji. But you can use the tool to sign up for tutoring help whenever you think of it. Just getting out of a difficult class session and know you’re going to need help? Open the app and see what’s available right away!

If you do choose to receive online help, you will be provided a Zoom link directly through Penji. No need to worry about finding the link in your email; just open your Penji account and join the meeting when it’s time!

Can I let you know how awesome and helpful my tutor was?

Yes! When your appointment is finished, you will receive a quick survey asking how your experience was, sort of like when you get to rate your Uber driver at the end of a ride. The feedback goes to Learning Commons admin and is used to help us improve our customer experience.

I still have questions about getting help. Who can I ask?

If you have additional questions, we encourage you to stop-by, email, or give us a call. The Learning Commons is open Monday through Thursday from 10am to 8pm and Friday 10am to 2pm. If you have additional questions, we encourage you to stop-by, email, or give us a call.
